Details
This workshop includes both classroom and garden components. We'll start by covering the basics indoors, where Bob Payne, Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteer, will introduce you to the fascinating fern life cycle — from gametophytes to sporophytes — and walk you through propagation techniques using spores and divisions. Then, we'll head out into the garden to collect ripe spores and observe some of the unique ferns in our collection before returning indoors for hands-on propagation practice.
This is a great seasonal project that fits well into the slower gardening months. Over the winter, your ferns will quietly begin their life cycle in simple containers you can keep on your windowsill, and by spring, they'll be ready for the next stage of growth and development. Whether you're just dipping your toes into horticulture or you've recently discovered your inner fern fanatic, this workshop is a great way to keep your green thumb active year-round.
Each participant will head home with a variety of fern propagules in different stages of development—so don't miss your chance to join us!
