Tasty Tuesday: Penn Station

Today's Tasty Tuesday brought us to Penn Station East Coast Subs, located beneath Stanhope Apartments just a short walk from NC State's campus.
The sub-shop opened their first location in 1983 in the heart of Cincinnati, Ohio by founder Jeff Osterfeld after inspiration from a trip to Philadelphia where he sampled the famous Philly Cheesesteak. Their original menu only had four sandwiches, including Jeff's take on the Philly Cheesesteak (steak, provolone cheese, onions, banana peppers, fresh mushrooms, spicy brown mustard, mayo and pizza sauce), hand-cut fries and freshly squeezed lemonade. All of which were prepared in front of customers to ensure the freshest ingredients were used. The Philly Cheesesteak, fries and lemonade still star on their menu today, but customers also have the option to order a grilled or cold sub, wraps and salads, or cheesebread. I have previously tried Penn Station, but this was my first visit to the Hillsborough Street location. As I walked in, I noticed the clean, updated furnishings, as well as the smiling employees waiting to take my order. Although it was tempting to go for the Philly Cheesesteak that gave owner Jeff his inspiration that built Penn Station, I decided to build my own 6-inch sandwich. I got a grilled sub with turkey, provolone cheese, banana peppers, lettuce and mayo with a side of their fresh-cut fries and lemonade. I watched as my order was fully prepared in front of me and couldn't wait to try my meal. The bread was golden brown with thinly sliced turkey, melted cheese and fresh vegetables piled inside.
All the components of my sub were prepared perfectly and the hand-cut fries and freshly squeezed lemonade added just the right amount of salty and sweet to complete my meal. Bonus? If you visit Penn Station this #tastytuesday or any other Tuesday, you get a FREE freshly baked cookie!
